What this is
Policy in the Grain of Life
I write. because I find it difficult not to.
Most of these pieces begin in the same place: a reaction to something that does not quite add up, a claim that feels too easy, or a policy argument that sounds complete but is not.
Writing is a way of working that through. It takes that initial response and shapes it into something more structured, something that can be tested and, if necessary, challenged.
I have spent much of my working life writing about and responding to public policy. And training adults, including community activists, to articulate arguments and to understand and critique their real-world impact. This is a continuation of that work.
The aim here is not to have an opinion on everything, or to persuade in any simple sense. It is to take arguments seriously, to examine them, to test them, and to see where they lead. If these pieces do anything useful, it will not be to provide a final answer, but to offer an attempt at thinking more carefully, and to help others do the same.
